Anekanta Consulting’s name originates from an ancient philosophy “Anekantavada” which is explained through the parable of the elephant and the blindfolded men.
Seven blindfolded men are challenged to describe an elephant when each is given a discrete vantage point. Each declares a different result; a wall, a tree, a snake. Each firmly believes that they are right and hold the truth about the elephant, but they only hold the truth about a small part of the elephant. Each makes an error of judgement. Only when the views of all seven are combined and considered are they able to agree that it is an elephant.
If we transfer this idea into a business and industry setting, this parable is often used in business and described as “looking at an elephant through a pinhole” or “needing the wider picture”. This means that alternative perspectives are needed in order to understand what is felt to be the most complete version of the truth on which a decision can be based.
The concept encourages the opening of the mind to the idea that there may be other perspectives. The different perspective may not be available within the organisation because everyone may think in the same way, all look the same, or may not have the skills, experience, benchmarking or resources available to them.
In business, and especially on Boards, we talk about “group think” being an issue in the decision making process; if the Board is a closed network and there is insufficient diversity it may miss out on the different perspectives resulting in a narrow or less successful strategy.
